Asplenium Nidus, or birds nest ferns, are evergreen ferns originally native to Southeast Asia, Hawaii, Polynesia, Christmas Island, India and Eastern Africa. Now they can be found in almost any woodland around the globe. They are brilliant ferns, that are incredibly easy to keep indoors, often living up to 10 years. Their waxy leaves are very vibrant and they can brighten any corner, growing well in shady spots but also in brighter areas, so long as they are shielded from direct sunlight.
Interestingly These plants have been used by medicinal herbalists for yonks, treating asthma, sores, weakness, and halitosis. Bird's nest ferns are also a popular vegetable in Taiwan, particularly in the Eastern part of the island where the young emerging fronds are used as a leafy vegetable. The fronds are now also gaining in popularity globally because of they are so delicious!
